Presentation: Civilians Break the Siege of Gaza, Nov. 8th, 2008
Civilians Break Israel's Siege of Gaza A Presentation Saturday, November 8th, 2 PM
On Aug. 23, 2008, two small boats, the SS Free Gaza and the SS Liberty, carried dozens of citizen-activists from around the world into Gaza, breaking the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. When they arrived at the Port of Gaza, they were greeted by the cheers and joyful tears of thousands of Palestinians who came out to the beaches to welcome them.
In making this historic voyage, civilians of the Free Gaza Movement demonstrated the power of non-violent activism to resist the illegal, immoral policies of governments, and delivered a message: that ordinary citizens can and must take action when other governments and institutions fail to take action in the face of such illegality and immorality. In October, the UN celebrated the Second International Day of Nonviolent Struggle by praising the Free Gaza Movement as a model of "satyagraha", the term Gandhi chose for his vision of peaceful resistance to British colonial rule.
The South Bay chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace, South Bay Mobilization, and the Sunnyvale chapter of the Pilgrims of Ibillin present a first-hand description of the voyage by Bay Area resident Paul Larudee, one of the passengers on the ships. Paul may also be joined by two other passengers, Darlene and Donna Wallach, pending their return from the current/second voyage to Gaza. Come join us for this report from the people who made this victory for peace happen.
