JVP Commends U.S. Talks with Iran; Condemns Continuing Israeli Obstruction
The 140,000 supporter-strong Jewish Voice for Peace today welcomed Secretary of State John Kerry’s commitment to nuclear talks with Iran, and condemned Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu’s continued obstruction of meaningful peace talks with the Palestinians and open contempt of talks with Iran.
JVP Executive Director Rebecca Vilkomerson said, ”While Netanyahu proclaims his commitment to peace, he has continued to authorize expansion of illegal settlements that make a true peace virtually impossible. He authorized at least 3,500 new homes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem this week alone. Secretary of State Kerry is absolutely right when he says that if Israel continues on this path it will be even more isolated internationally."
Cecilie Surasky, JVP's Deputy Director added, “As the recent groundbreaking Pew poll of American Jews shows, most of us do not offer knee-jerk support to the Jewish American institutions that blindly support Israel, especially when they continue their destructive policies. American Jews were the biggest US religious group to oppose the US war with Iraq—my guess is that Netanyahu’s openly contemptuous view of a non-belligerent approach to Iran would find equally little support. “
Kerry’s comments about the effectiveness of the international movement to isolate Israel for its repeated violations of human rights laws are a remarkable validation of the growing power of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. The BDs movement is a Palestinian led effort to pressure Israel to be accountable to international law.
