After a lengthy hearing, which included five hours of public testimony and five hours of student senate deliberations, the Associated Students at the University of California (ASUC) voted last week in favor of divesting from companies that profit from the violation of human rights abuses in the Palestinian Occupied Territories.
Following recent divestment votes at UC Irvine and UC San Diego, this is another historic vote for human rights at one of the world's great public universities — but until the evening of April 23, the resolution was in danger of being vetoed. In 2010, a similar vote passed overwhelmingly but it was vetoed by the ASUC president.
APRIL 23, 2013 UPDATE: ASUC President Landgraf announced he will not veto the UC Berkeley divestment resolution: Landgraf announces no veto on divestment bill SB 160.
