100’s of Chanukah celebrations rekindle resistance to Trump

From BDS dreidels to “Boycott, boycott, boycott” to #LatkesAgainstTrump, Jews across the U.S. challenge Trump’s Executive Order
(New York City, NY) From Seattle to Ann Arbor to Tuscon, from New York City to LA to Miami, hundreds of Chanukah celebrations were held challenging President Trump’s Executive Order. In family gatherings, community parties and outdoor demonstrations, Jews and friends gathered to celebrate Chanukah’s story of resistance – against Trump.
Among the hundreds of celebrations, here are some of our favorites: In New York City and Philadelphia, JVP Chapter Chanukah parties sang “Boycott, boycott, boycott” to the tune of “Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel” and “Chanukah, Oh, Chanukah/ No executive order/ Let’s all light the people’s menorah.” Illustrations depicting resisting Trump’s Executive Order were colored by folk of all ages from Seattle to Concord, including original artwork by Micah Bizant. JVP chapters in LA, Miami and Boston all took to the streets. And everywhere, people were playing BDS dreidel.

In this time of rising authoritarian rule in the US and around the globe, we celebrate Chanukah by infusing our rituals with acts of defiance. So this year, Jews in the U.S. are spinning BDS dreidels, crafting new lyrics to Chanukah songs and discussing Israeli apartheid while flipping latkes – and in so doing defying Trump’s Executive Order. Trump is attempting to dangerously narrow Jewishness and use antisemitism as cover for suppressing the thriving movement for Palestinian freedom. Our Chanukah celebrations rekindle our resistance!”
