University of California Student Association votes for divestment from companies complicit in human rights abuses

Jewish Voice for Peace applauds the University of California Student Association (UCSA) Board of Directors for resoundingly approving two bills calling for divestment from multi-national corporations complicit in human rights abuses against Palestinians.

This vote comes after years of campaigning from a hugely diverse coalition of students across the university system, and majority votes to endorse divestment at seven out of nine undergraduate campuses (Berkeley, L.A., San Diego, Davis, Irvine, Riverside, and Santa Cruz). The particular resolutions also noted human rights violations in many other countries, including the U.S.

Gabi Kirk, JVP Campus Liaison notes, “As a Jewish UC alum, I am happy to see the official representatives of the thousands of students stand for people above profit. I urge the Regents and other decision-makers to heed the students’ call and follow their lead and divest.”
